Two things confuse almost everyone booking Punta Cana for the first time, and both are worth clearing up before you look at a single resort.
The first is the name. "Punta Cana" is used for a fifty-kilometre stretch of coast, but it is also the name of a specific area at the southern tip. Most resorts people call "Punta Cana" are actually in Bavaro, Arena Gorda or Uvero Alto further north. So the question "Punta Cana or Bavaro?" is really "the southern tip, or the main resort strip?"
The second is that the resort names encode who they are for, and once you know the code the choice gets much simpler.

On getting around: almost everyone flies into Punta Cana International (PUJ) and transfers by road. Nothing here is walkable between areas - these are self-contained all-inclusive resorts strung along a coast road, and once you arrive you will mostly stay put. That makes the airport transfer and the resort's own facilities the two things that matter most.
Every property in this guide is a five-star all-inclusive. That is what this coast is.
Bavaro or Punta Cana? The question everyone asks
Short answer: for a first trip, Bavaro.
Bavaro is the main resort strip and the most developed part of the coast. It has the widest choice of resorts, the shops and restaurants outside the gates, the casinos, and the shortest transfer from the airport. If you want to be able to leave your resort and find something happening, this is the area that allows it.
Punta Cana proper, at the southern tip, is quieter and includes the upscale Cap Cana development. It is beautiful and considerably more exclusive - and, as below, not somewhere we can currently help you book.
Consider Bavaro if you want:
- The shortest airport transfer of the main resort areas
- Shops, restaurants, bars and casinos within reach of the resort
- The largest choice of resorts at the widest range of prices
- A long, wide beach with plenty on it
The trade-offs: it is the busiest and most built-up stretch, the beach is shared with a lot of other resorts, and it is the least secluded option.
Resorts here: Lopesan Costa Bavaro Resort Spa & Casino on Bavaro Beach holds 4.9 - among the highest-rated properties anywhere on this platform - and Lopesan Caoba Lagoon Resort Spa & Casino matches it at 4.9. Both are large resort-and-casino properties with a spa, lounge access and a restaurant reservation service. Ocean Blue & Sand on Playa Bavaro holds 4.6 and has the best direct-booking terms in this guide - see below.
Lopesan also operates Serenity Bay and Splash Cove in the same complex. Their guest ratings are much weaker - 3.8 and 2.3 respectively - and we are not going to pretend otherwise. If you want a Lopesan resort in Bavaro, the first two are the ones with the record behind them.
Arena Gorda and El Macao - best for families and for adults-only
North of Bavaro, Arena Gorda is a long stretch of white sand with a small number of very large resort complexes on it. Bahia Principe operates six properties here, effectively as one campus, which is why this area gives the clearest choice between a family holiday and an adults-only one.
Consider Arena Gorda if you want:
- A better beach than Bavaro's - wider, whiter and less crowded
- A large complex with plenty of pools, restaurants and evening entertainment
- A clean choice between family and adults-only within the same operator
- Slightly lower rates than the closest-in resorts
The trade-offs: there is much less outside the gates than in Bavaro, and the airport transfer is longer. This is a stay-on-the-resort kind of area.
The naming code, which makes this simple
Bahia Principe's resort names tell you who the resort is for:
- "Explore" means family-friendly. Pools, kids' facilities, family rooms, entertainment.
- "Escape" means adults-only. No children, quieter, aimed at couples and honeymooners.
Once you know that, the choice takes a minute.
Family resorts here (Explore): Bahia Principe Explore Turquesa is the closest in and holds 4.6. Bahia Principe Explore Legend holds 4.7, the best of the family properties, and was formerly known as Bahia Principe Fantasia Punta Cana. Bahia Principe Explore Esmeralda holds 4.6 and adds spa treatments, and Bahia Principe Explore Punta Cana holds 4.5 and has the lowest starting rate of the six.
Adults-only resorts here (Escape): Bahia Principe Escape Ambar holds 4.7 and adds spa treatments and poolside cabanas - the pick of the two. Bahia Principe Escape Aquamarine also holds 4.7 at a lower starting rate.
A useful thing about a campus like this: if you are travelling as an extended group with mixed requirements, adults and families can book different properties in the same complex and still spend the days together.
Uvero Alto - best for quiet and space
Furthest north and least developed. Uvero Alto is a long, wild stretch of coast with a handful of large resorts and effectively nothing between them - the antidote to Bavaro.
Consider Uvero Alto if you want:
- A quiet beach with very few people on it
- Space, and a resort that is the whole holiday
- A second or third visit, having already done the busy strip
- Somewhere genuinely restful
The trade-offs: it is the longest transfer from the airport, there is nothing outside the resort at all, and excursions take longer to reach. If you like leaving the resort, do not stay here.
Resorts here: Ocean El Faro holds 4.7 - a large resort built around a lighthouse, with a lazy river, family pools and separate adults-only facilities, so it covers both audiences in one property. It also has the strongest direct-booking benefits of anything in this guide.
Cap Cana, and why we cannot help you there
Being straight about this is more useful than steering you around it.
Cap Cana is the upscale, gated part of the southern tip - a marina, championship golf, Playa Juanillo, and the most expensive resorts in the country. If you search for where to stay in Punta Cana, most guides will recommend it first, and they are not wrong to.
We have no Cap Cana properties. Nor anything in Punta Cana Village or on Playa Juanillo. If Cap Cana is what you want, book it directly with the resort - our inventory on this coast is concentrated in Bavaro, Arena Gorda and Uvero Alto, all of which are a different proposition: large-scale all-inclusive rather than boutique luxury.

What booking direct actually gets you in Punta Cana
Free cancellation is listed on every single property in this guide, along with modification without an extra fee. On an all-inclusive booked months ahead for a hurricane-season-adjacent destination, that is the benefit that matters most.
Free breakfast and a restaurant reservation service are listed on all of them. The reservation service is worth more than it sounds: at a large all-inclusive, the speciality a la carte restaurants are the ones that book out, and having a channel to arrange them in advance is a real advantage over arriving and joining a queue.
Here is the finding worth acting on. The two Ocean resorts - Ocean Blue & Sand and Ocean El Faro - are the only properties on this coast that list:
- An airport service. In a destination where every guest arrives at the same airport and transfers by road, this is the single most practical benefit available, and nothing else here offers it.
- Early check-in and late checkout. Flights to the Caribbean land early and leave late; these two can add most of a day at each end.
- A dining credit, on top of the all-inclusive.
- Pay at hotel, rather than paying up front.
Everything else in this guide - all six Bahia Principe properties and all four Lopesan ones - lists none of those four. If the direct-booking terms are what you are optimising for, the Ocean resorts are the answer, and it is not a close call.

One thing to watch on this coast: the resorts here are priced in different currencies. The Bahia Principe properties show rates in euros, while the Lopesan and Ocean resorts show them in Dominican pesos. Convert before you compare - a peso figure looks dramatically larger than a euro one for the same room.
